All of the the 135 senior students at The Berkeley Institute
(as well as as as the the over 500 underclassmen) are working hard towards graduation in in in in in preparation for becoming leaders in in in in their lifelong careers careers in in in in “both the the local and global communities ” But what exactly are are are are those careers? How do do they they prepare? And most importantly when
will they they find time to to to do do all all of of this? These are are some of of the the questions we we want to to to help students to to to critically and and strategically think about and answer In In July of 2018 the Berkeley Institute
counselors obtained certification as Global Career Career Development Development Facilitators through the National Career Career Development Development Association (NCDA) after an intensive 120-hours of of of preparation Since July some of of of the the the undertakings of of of the the the counselors to assist students in in in in in answering these questions include:
1 Development of the Berkeley Institute
College and Career Resource Centre 2 A New age-appropriate career/interest surveys to support our students’ investigation and decision- making processes 3 3 Administration of the the Preliminary SAT SAT (PSAT) to all S2 S2 and and and S3 S3 students and and and thereafter forwarding regular career tips to to all S2 S2 and and and S3 S3 Advisories 4 Established the week week of October 1 as Berkeley College & Career preparation week week 5 “Counselor Corner” is the the first week week of each month for students to complete career-related or or or or other counseling-related activities 6 Survey of all S4 students regarding their career interests and post-graduation plans in in in order to ensure that they are guided more appropriately throughout the the the year for Pathways to to Your Future Senior Senior Day Senior Senior Seminar etc to to ensure their relevance 7 Apprenticeship and and training opportunities the the the Department of Workforce Development and and the the Construction Association It is our goal to ensure that all all students receive compre- hensive career preparation as they leave the the the halls of The Berkeley Berkeley Institute
and “are called to the the the wide cold world ” Saltus Grammar School
SENIOR YEAR REQUIREMENTS

The Saltus Graduate Year (SGY) program program is a a a a a a a a a a a 2-year program program which has proven to be extraordinarily successful in in in preparing our students for university The program offers a a a a a a a number Advanced Placement (AP) courses and most of of our our our students opt to take at at least one AP AP AP course course graduates are granted AP AP AP credits
at at university Such success enables them to to to take higher level level courses and in in some cases to to to move directly into second year studies at university We also offer A-levels in in in a a a a a a a a a limited number of of courses and other pre-college cours- es es such as College Level Examination Program (CLEP) However we we recognize that not all all students can work at at at this this level in all all all courses courses For this this reason our our our flexible pro- gram additionally offers courses courses that prepare students for tertiary education and are are are recognized by universities but are are not assessed through external exams Students take a a a a a a Life Skills course in both years of of the the the SGY program They research the the the types types of of of careers they might might be interested in in types types of of of colleges/universities they might might like to to attend and programs offered at at various universities universities They learn how how to to to to write personal statements how how to to to apply to to to universities universities and for scholar- ships The Life Skills lesson lesson is is supported by our advisory program where we we provide SAT preparation lessons Students must also complete a a a a a a a Work Experience week at the the end of the the first year Saltus offers two trips to to visit universities universities through the the SGY program In the the the first year year we tour tour UK universities universities universities and in in the the second year year students tour tour universities universities in in Canada On average about half of the graduating class opts to attend university or or college in in in Canada Mainly for 2 reasons First they offer a a a a a a a a a a a a general first year and and second the the the the the the the cost is often less than the the the the the the the US and and sometimes even the the the the the the the the UK UK The other half of of the the the the the the the the graduating class split their acceptances between the the the the the UK UK and the the the the the US 10 BROUGHT TO YOU BY EDcellerate (Berkeley school song )
